WTT Star Contender European Summer Series 2022

Here is the recap of the WTT Star Contender European Summer Series 2022.

The first event in the WTT European Summer Series, the WTT Star Challenge Budapest, will be held at the Budapest Olympic Center from July 11 to 17. Superstars from the world table tennis have gathered here and are ready to send.

Ma Long at WTT Star Challenge Budapest

In terms of men’s singles, Chinese player Ma Long is undoubtedly the most heavyweight player. As the top seed in this competition, he is looking forward to winning his first WTT men’s singles championship. As a “strongest” men’s table tennis player, he hopes to have a taste of the championship after winning the Tokyo Olympics.

In March of this year, Ma Long made a strong entry into the WTT Singapore Grand Slam men’s singles final, and now he is ready to win the championship.

Ma Long is very disappointed and tired

Ma Long nearly cries.

The Dragons’ eyes were full of tears? Or am I wrong?

It seems that Ma Long is really tired. During the WTT European Series, Three games a day, very tired and not easy, but they all won.

This is the post-match interview between Ma Long and Lin Gaoyuan in men’s singles early yesterday morning.

It’s always been hard work, there’s nothing that’s not hard work. Hearing the first sentence uttered by the soft voice, he held it back, and I burst into tears in an instant.

He was really really really not easy, too. Really really really great.

The last game was quite anxious. The final game was desperate and finally came back to win.

Ma Long versus Félix Lebrun

This is a very important match for both players.
Ma Long has a higher chance of winning. Ma long is very humble! That’s why he’s the best player in the world. What Ma Long said is nothing more than a compliment to the young player.

Being the best is not only about yourself but also about accepting others’ performance and potential.

Felix Lebrun and Dang Qiu are the Penholders’ hope. The most beautiful playing style in table tennis. Felix Lebrun is the new hope for France, and for European players. He is still young, but he is already one of the best European players in the World. He is using a penhold grip.

Hopefully next time, Felix Lebrun will give his best of the best against Ma Long, a double Olympic champion.

The semi-final match

This is the match statistics for the semi-final.

Ma Long vs Wang Chuqin. Semi-final match of the WTT Star Contender European Summer Series 2022.

it’s harder and harder to win, even for the Dragon.
Ma Long has a higher winning percentage in his carrer. Career win is 87%.
Wang Chuqin has 77% career win.

Here is the match statistics:

At the end, it’s the question of motivation.
Wang Chuqin is more motivated, at the end of the match. He is very quick, and his backhand attack has push Ma Long into the defensive mode.

It’s seem that Ma Long is not really motivated at the 6th game and the 7th game. He needs to pivot more to win.
You can easy observe that, since Ma Long uses his backhand to defense. He uses the pivot less and less. It could be due to the age, or the motivation problem.

Anyway, congratulation to Wang Chuqin.
Final game! It’s Sweden verus China.

Wang Chuqin conquers ‘The Dragon’ : There’s a huge sense of shock ringing out across BOK Hall as Ma Long heads for the exit after losing a gruelling seven-game semifinal against young compatriot Wang Chuqin. In a match packed with twists and turns, the momentum swung both ways at different points of the contest, and in the end a deciding game was required to separate the two. Playing with a renewed vigour, Wang kept up the high intensity approach and was rewarded for his bravery, wearing down the top seed to record a famous 4-3 win over one of the sport’s all-time greats (11-5, 2-11, 4-11, 11-9, 3-11, 11-5, 11-5).

The final game

Sun Yingsha advanced to the final of the WTT European Series. She played very well.
Today, let’s see how Sun Yingsha practices her service.

It’s very important to get the right feeling before the real matches. It will boost your confidence and your feeling during the competition.

Hello! The WTT European has ended. The final is between the Chinese player, Wang Chuqin and the Sweden player, Truls Moregard.

Can Wang Chuqin claim his 3rd title in his career?

Wang Chuqin vs Truls Moregard

Yes. The head-to-head score is 2-0 for Wang Chuqin.

However, it’s funny that officially Moregard is ranked as World Ranking number 5 and Wang Chuqin is World Ranking 14.

Surprise? I was just making fun of the WTT ranking.
Wang Chuqin won the game against the Dragon this time. The current WTT World ranking is not correct.

Some incidents in the game

Since I was watching the game live. So there are some incidents that you can’t see in the highlights.

The service complaint! Truls Moregard and Wang Chuqin at the end of the game, they are not happy. Truls Moregard complained about the serve of Wang Chuqin. It’s hard to see the contact point.

A small incident in the final game with explication

In the previous video, I didn’t explain you correctly. It’s confusing for many viewers.

I’m sorry about that. In this video, let’s discuss about this small incident.

At the beginning of the last set, when Truls Moregard was losing 1-3.

This is the fifth game. Two players are ready.

The umpire said “Let! Love all”. The ball touches the net. The score is 0-0.

Truls Moregard complained about the service of Wang Chuqin.

Maybe, he said “Why do you call his service now? It’s 0-0”.

I think that maybe Truls complained that he couldn’t see the contact point of Wang Chuqin. It’s a common problem of the match between a lefty player and a righty player.

It’s very hard for each others to see the serve. Let’s see the slow motion again. What do you think?

The commentator said “Still questioning the service here, Moregard”.

The umpire said “Please play. Love all. 0-0”. Moregard seems to be not happy.

Some players are agree with Moregard. They said that Wang Chuqin blocks his point of contact with his head or torso.  It’s almost impossible for the umpire to see it since he’s sitting off to one side.  You can only tell he’s blocking the contact point if you’re looking straight on like the receiver.  There are so many players that do this because they can get away with it.  Even Ma Long does it to some degree.

At the same time, when looking at the slow motion. Some players said that ff you want to get an idea of the faut serve, the ball is barely visible when it hits the racket of Wang Chuqin. For Moregard who is more on the left it is even more complicated and when Wang needs the point he only has to move his head a little further. The rule says that it is up to the server to ensure that there is no possible doubt. No part of the body should screen between the ball and the thrower from the moment it is thrown.

What is your opinion?

The winner is Wang Chuqin

Congratulations to all of the winners!

Here are some of the memorable moments!

Liang Jingkun vs Truls Moregardh

Truls Moregard makes a great performance in this tournament.
He is no doubt, one of the best European player right now.

He defeated many top players. His playing style is great to watch, with many variation.
However, some viewers don’t like him because of his behavior. A little bit disrepectful for the opponent.

Remember that, Liang Jingkun is the World number 3. And in the final, again, we will have Sweden versus China.

It’s a good sign. Because watching China-China in the final game is boring.

Here is the match statistic

It seems that the more Truls Moregard plays, the more is get used to the opponent’s shots.

Liang Jingkun is trying to attack with his quick backhand attack. However, Truls is very strong with defensive strokes, far from the table.

It’s harder for Liang Jingkun to score the point.
When Truls gets used to the opponent shots, he started throw out a lot of shots variation. Quick backhand punch, lobbing, forehand smash.

With the creativity, and the variations, Truls Moregard started to dominate the game. At the end, he defeated the World Number 3 of China.

Truls Moregard’s sensational Men’s Singles campaign has been extended another day after the 20-year-old ace secured his biggest win yet on Day 4. Taking on World No.3 Liang Jingkun for a place in the final, Moregard, assisted by legendary figure Jorgen Persson in the coaching corner, technically and tactically outsmarted his Chinese rival. Try what may, a bemused Liang couldn’t find an answer to the European’s captivating game plan, and ultimately emerged second best (13-11, 5-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-8, 11-7).

“I’ve had some tough matches along the way, meeting Mattias Falck and Chuang Chih-Yuan, so I’ve had a difficult road to the final. I think I played the best table tennis I’ve ever played today, making good decisions at crucial moments and putting a lot of pressure on Liang. So, I’m super happy with my performance.” Truls Moregard

Awaiting Moregard in the final is a player aged just two years his senior after Wang Chuqin, 22, sent shockwaves across BOK Hall with his incredible semifinal victory over Ma Long. Playing out a pulsating end-to-end affair, the tide of war appeared to be leaning in Ma’s favour after the top seed threw down the gauntlet in brutal fashion with punishing wins in games two, three and five. However, Wang refused to give up the fight and managed to force the match into a decider. With momentum swinging back towards him, Wang had one last throw of the dice, and it worked out beautifully, unleashing a series of heavy blows with pinpoint accuracy to bring ‘The Dragon’ down (11-5, 2-11, 4-11, 11-9, 3-11, 11-5, 11-5).

Ma Long – Wang Chuqin vs Felix Lebrun Alexis Lebrun

There are many upsets in this WTT European Summer Series events. It’s very hard to predict anything because the level of the top players is very close together.

Some upsets during the tournament

Hello. There are many upsets in this WTT Championships. It’s very hard to predict anything because the level of the top players is very close together.

It’s a good sign for table tennis. The moment when a European and a Chinese team play each other and it’s European with the penhold grip.

Many tops seeds are eliminated early.

Paul DRINKHALL (England) 3-0 Liu Dingshuo [11-7, 11-9, 11-4]

Camera angle during the WTT events

ITTF needs to set up cameras on each side focusing on the server when the players reach Quarterfinal. Each player gets one challenge per game, and the Umpire could review on his own up to three times during a game. The player’s challenge is reviewed by a different umpire who sits in front of monitors and the umpire in the match could look to view it too. If a player loses his or her challenge, they lose their timeout, if he or she doesn’t have a timeout, then he or she loses a point. This would cut down on the illegal or questionable serving!

We make fun of the rankings and say Wang is 14 and Truls is 5. It’s unrealistic to expect no upsets. It’s not good to keep a ranking lower if the man or woman plays in many more tournaments while the others play in a few. Ratings are not perfect because the players are not perfect, it’s unrealistic that all of them will play in the same number of tournaments to get that true.
