Summary of the World Table Tennis Championships 2021 (Official WTT event).

WTTC 2021

The World Table Tennis Championships-2021 (formally known as the «2021 World Table Tennis Championships Finals») is the WTT official table tennis competition that is held in Houston, Texas, from November 23 to November 29, 2021. The championships will be held for the 56th time, and for the first time in the United States. In 2019, Houston was crowned host after defeating Agadir, Morocco.

The event will not feature reigning champions Ma Long, Liu Shiwen, and Xu Xin, since China has chosen to send younger players in preparation for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.

The World Championships in 2021 are planned to last seven days. The draws will take place on November 21st.

There will be five individual events. All events will be single-elimination tournaments. The first round of singles events will have 128 spots, and the first round of doubles events will have 64 spots. Singles matches will be best of seven games, with doubles matches best of five.

Qualification for the tournament

The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) initially scheduled regional and continental stage events to serve as qualifiers for the Championships finals in Houston. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there were no regional or continental stage competitions held prior to the Championships finals. The ITTF decided on the qualifiers primarily based on the world rankings published on June 8 (week 23) and June 25 (week 25). (week 24). Six member associations (China, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Germany, South Korea, and Hong Kong) were eligible for five singles entries and two doubles entries.

Fan Zhendong claimed the Gold medal. This is his 1st World Championship title ever. Truls Moregardh from Sweden takes the silver medal at the World Table Tennis Championships 2021.

China takes the 5 Gold medals out of 6 events. Sweden claims the Gold Medal for the Men’s double event. In the Women’s single events, all of the players on the podium are Chinese. Chinese women’s table tennis is still too strong compared to the rest of the world.

This is the first-ever Mixed Double between China and the USA, Lin Gaoyuan (CHINA) plays with Lily Zhang (USA). They won the Bronze medal, this is the first-ever medal for the Ping Pong Diplomacy spirit. The USA won 0.5 medals in the Houston WTTC 2021.
