Amateur player takes a lot of ball

My players in my table tennis clubs often take a lot of balls. They take 5 balls and put them in the pocket. I’ve told them “Hey, you should take only 1 ball.”. And they asked me why?

Only one ball

Then I told them a story I’ve heard about Ma Long. When Ma Long was a kid, training at a table tennis club in Anshan. His coach asked him to play only with one ball. And the coach asked him, not to miss the ball. If he missed the ball, then he could pick them again, and play with the same ball.

This is the way the Chinese coach asked their student to focus on consistency. Try to avoid unforced errors.

With one ball, the top Chinese players can play several rallies. Meanwhile, in my club, the young players use 1 ball only for 2 rallies. They forget to focus on the quality of the technique.

Use one ball, but focus on consistency. Only one ball in your hand. Don’t miss the shot.
