Ma Long, Fan Zhendong lost in WTT Macao 2022

Ma Long will play at WTT Champions Macao 2021 China Stars event on Jan 19-23. He will play men’s singles and mixed doubles with Qian Tianyi. The event does not have WTT ranking points. Team China sends 14 players for men’s singles, 13 for women’s singles, and 15 pairs of mixed doubles.

Ma Long makes a come back in 2022 by participating in the WTT Macao.

The WTT Champions Macao 2021 China Stars will bring together world-class table tennis players, including Olympic champions Ma Long, Fan Zhendong, Xu Xin, Liu Shiwen, Chen Meng, Wang Manyu, and Sun Yingsha, as well as other renowned players like Liang Jingkun, Wang Chuqin, Lin Gaoyuan, Wang Yidi, Chen Xingtong, and Doo Hoi Kam, to compete in three (16 pairs). Cheong Chi Cheng of Macau has also been invited to compete in the men’s singles.

A round of 16 matches in all categories will be played on the first two matchdays (19 and 20 January). The quarterfinals in all categories will take place on January 21. The quarterfinals in men’s and women’s singles, as well as the semifinals and final in mixed doubles, will take place on a penultimate day (22 January). The men’s and women’s singles semifinals and finals will be held on January 23.

Fan Zhendong lost at WTT Macao

Xu Yingbin will be seeking another huge scalp after defeating world number one Fan Zhendong 3-1 in the quarter-finals (18-16, 11-9, 11-2, 11-6). In the Men’s Singles semi-finals, world number 117 will face world number seven Lin Gaoyuan.

All eyes will be on Xu as he attempts to pull off another upset against Lin, who defeated Lin Shidong 3-2 in the quarter-finals (10-12, 14-12, 11-7, 8-11, 13-11).

Wang Chuqin defeated Ma Long’s power 3-1 (11-7,11-7, 8-11, 11-8) to go to the semi-finals against world number three Xu Xin. Wang’s amazing head-to-head record versus Ma now stands at three wins after another crushing victory against the illustrious Chinese legend.

Ma has only won once against the world number 12 in their last four meetings in 2018. Ma was unable to improve on his losing record against his compatriot, as he only managed to take one game from Wang in their quarter-final match. The rising talent is one of only a few players who can boast a positive head-to-head record against the GOAT. Following a 3-0 (12-10, 11-5, 11-4) victory against Xiang Peng, Xu will face Wang next.

Xu Xin, Liu Shiwen is the mixed double champion

The pair’s combination is undeniably a winning formula, as they won the Mixed Doubles title for the second time. The team of Xu Xin and Liu Shiwen proved too powerful for Kuai Man and Fan Zhendong, who were defeated in the Mixed Doubles final.

Xu and Liu, the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games Mixed Doubles silver medalists, asserted their authority with a 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-5) victory to claim the first of three titles on offer at WTT Macao.
