Ma Long at WTT Star Challenge Budapest

The first event in the WTT European Summer Series, the WTT Star Challenge Budapest, will be held at the Budapest Olympic Center from July 11 to 17. Superstars from the world table tennis have gathered here and are ready to play.

Men’s single events

In terms of men’s singles, Chinese player Ma Long is undoubtedly the most heavyweight player. As the top seed in this competition, he is looking forward to winning his first WTT men’s singles championship. As a “strongest” men’s table tennis player, he hopes to have a taste of the championship after winning the Tokyo Olympics. In March of this year, Ma Long made a strong entry into the WTT Singapore Grand Slam men’s singles final, and now he is ready to win the championship.

No. 2 seed Liang Jingkun will be a strong opponent for Ma Long. After losing to Ma Long in the WTT Singapore Grand Slam semi-final, Liang Jingkun is looking to make a breakthrough in Budapest and close his gap with Ma Long in the world rankings. Calderano (Brazil) is the No. 3 seed in the event, and the 2021 World Table Tennis Championship runner-up Truls Moregard (Sweden) is No. 4 seed. Moregaard won the WTT Regular Challenge Budapest in 2021. Men’s singles champion.

No. 5 seed Lin Yunju (Chinese Taipei) and No. 6 seed Tomokazu (Japan) will also attack the championship. Last month, Lin Yun-ju won his first WTT regular challenge men’s singles title in Zagreb.

Women’s single events

Women’s singles is led by Chen Meng. A few months ago, she won the WTT Singapore Grand Slam Women’s Singles Championship. This time she will play in Budapest. As an Olympic champion and world No. 1, Chen Meng will be challenged by other players. Challenging Chen Meng is by no means easy. It requires strong strength and outstanding performance, but the overall strength of other female players should not be underestimated.

The performances of No. 2 seed Sun Yingsha and No. 3 seed Wang Manyu have been impressive in the past year. They both missed the championship in the WTT Singapore Grand Slam. Sun Yingsha and Wang Manyu will challenge teammate Chen Meng, and the competition for the top spot in the women’s world rankings will also intensify. At the same time, the performance of No. 4 seed Wang Yidi is also highly anticipated.

Two Japanese players, Mima Ito and Hina Hayata are ranked No. 5 and No. 6 respectively. They have both won the women’s singles championship in the WTT regular challenge before. This time in Budapest, they will surely make waves in the arena. Germany’s Han Ying is the No. 7 seed.

Chen Meng withdrew

World No. 1 Chen Meng withdrew from the WTT Star Challenge Budapest due to illness. According to the original schedule, Chen Meng will play the women’s singles 1/16 finals and women’s doubles 1/8 finals at the Budapest Olympic Center today.

Due to Chen Meng’s withdrawal from the competition, Chen Meng’s seat in the women’s singles will be replaced by Li Shiwen (South Korea), who had previously lost, and Chen Meng/Wang Yidi’s seat in the women’s doubles will be replaced by the Hungarian team Najivaradi/Islam, who had previously lost.

I wish Chen Meng a speedy recovery and all the best.
