Mattias Falck is the first player since Jan-Ove Waldner to reach a World Table Tennis Championships Final! He is real hope for the youngster in table tennis. His playing style and equipment fit very well to the new trend: Flat hit, speed, and aggressive attacking style! This is a similar story like 1 year ago, in the Female table tennis, when Mima Ito dominated the scene with her unique short pimple style.
Special thanks to his coach Jorgen Persson nowadays, who has been making an upgrade at Mattias Falck play. That’s why a good coach is very very important in table tennis.

Falck Mattias Forehand rubber – Short Pips Yasaka RAKZA PO
He is using the short pips on the forehand side: Yasaka RAKZA PO. Advantages of short pips are Flat hit, quick attack, and counter topspin.

His techniques and smashes are really awesome, and he CAN move as quickly as smaller players. This playing fits very well to the new trend in table tennis.
Advantage of short pips on Forehand: serve return, the short game and is able to kill the ball well.
Disadvantage: Third ball attack, and looping the long ball. That’s why Mattias always stay close to the table. When he smashed the ball, it is a huge pressure. Because the spin is not normal (like the inverted rubber), but the speed is fast.

Falck Mattias backhand rubber – Yasaka RAKZA X
Rakza X is the modern ESN rubber – quick is fast and spinny. Rakza is in the list of top 10 backhand rubbers for the modern table tennis.
It’s spinny but very consistent to flick the ball. That’s why Falck Mattias often rotates his racket to serve.
Mattias said he had a poor backhand when he was younger and his coach recommended short pips to help with a shorter stroke. One advantage is that with a flatter forehand, he can adopt a much more backhand oriented grip which is definitely his strong point.
The main advantage comes from having a combination racket that results in variation in rhythm and speed during blocks.

He often uses the backhand side (red color) to serve, and rotate his paddle when he receives the short ball. This is a big advantage of using the combination racket (one short pimple, one normal inverted rubber). Using the spin variation to confuse the opponent.

But when he receives, he often uses the short pimples rubber to receive:

I’d be interested to find out if MF has changed his sp rubber over the past year: I get the impression he has shown a remarkable improvement in his forehand hitting consistency, making markedly fewer unforced errors. He used to be a bit like Jesus Cantero, making impossible counter-smashes against low balls, and losing high sitters. Or has he changed the motion? Or the grip-rotation?
Very good Coach EmRaThich! You may should add comments of his coach Jorgen Persson nowadays, who has been making an upgrade at his play.
You are right. I will add it right now.
