Butterfly Timo Boll ALC Review – the best Butterfly blade

Review of Timo Boll ALC, one of the best blades of Butterfly.

People who are good at table tennis use the Timo Boll ALC blade, and it’s one of the most popular blades out there. So much so that even after several years, it is still a top-notch blade. In fact, it’s one of the most popular blades of Butterfly. Only the Viscaria, which is also a butterfly blade, is more popular.

You can consider Timo Boll ALC, as the second-best blade of Butterfly.

Timo Boll ALC

The Timo Boll ALC is a well-known blade in the Butterfly line. Typical of ArylateCarbon blades, it has a medium-hard touch, plays quickly and accurately, and has a fine touch for any spin-oriented playing style.

Timo Boll ZLC is a little bit slower than the Timo Boll ALC, the speed is 11.7, and the vibration of 10.8. Both blades are 5 ply blades.

Timo Boll ZLF is the slowest one. It is a very controllable blade. The reaction is 10.5, the slowest of the 3 versions of the Timo Boll blade.

Why does this blade feature Timo Boll?

It was Timo Boll himself who came up with the Timo Boll ALC after he wanted more speed than the Timo Boll Spirit could give him. He also liked the way the Viscaria felt to him. When Butterfly heard this, they went on to make the ALC.

Timo Boll has used this blade for the rest of his career, and he has won a lot of titles with it. Recently, Timo Boll has used a faster blade, due to the lack of power with the new plastic ball.

Blade composition

Timo Boll ALC is an expensive blade (check price 1/ check price 2).

  • Style: Attack
  • Plies: 5W+2ALC
  • Thickness: 5.8mm
  • Made in: Japan
  • Head Size: 157x150mm
  • Weight: 86g
  • Reaction: 11.8
  • Vibration: 10.3

So this blade is for attacking style, who is the spin-oriented player.

Butterfly Timo Boll ALC has 7 layers. They are made up of two layers of arylate carbon, two layers of koto, two layers of limba, and one layer of Kiri, the core. The arylate carbon is light and gives you speed, while the layers of wood help you feel.

Timo Boll ALC VS Timo Boll Spirit

Timo Boll alc and Timo Boll Spirit are two distinct products.

Overall, Timo Boll Spirit is easier to control. Timo Boll ALC is the finest choice for competition because of its superior ability to compete. Unlike the Timo Boll Spirit, Timo Boll ALC can simply be used to produce a more powerful loop. The backspin on the forehand drive is excellent, and its touch is quite clear (due to higher vibration).

Timo Boll Spirit is similar to the Timo Boll ALC in terms of quality. However, in terms of grip and control, it is superior. When topspin far from the table, you’ll have to use more active force. The Timo Boll ALC, on the other hand, offers more leverage due to its elastic feel, but it may be difficult to manage unless you are a skilled player.

Timo Boll Spirit:

  • Plies: 5W+2ALC
  • Thickness: 5.8mm
  • Weight: 87g
  • Reaction: 11.8
  • Vibration: 10.3

Great for the European looping style of play. The Timo Boll Spirit has a good balance of speed and control.

Timo Boll ALC:

  • Plies: 5W+2ALC
  • Thickness: 5.8mm
  • Weight: 86g
  • Reaction: 11.8
  • Vibration: 10.3

They have the same composition, but the position of ALC layer is not the same.

3 handles types

Timo Boll ALC comes with 3 types of handles:

I like the Flared handle the best. You can read the best handle type in table tennis here.

The advantage of the ALC layer

ALC is one of the best series blades of Butterfly.

There is no doubt that the best thing about the ALC is its large sweet spot and long dwell time. Players can easily make their loops curve steeply from almost anywhere on the blade thanks to the medium to high throw angle it has. That’s what Timo Boll said about the ALC. After he tried faster blades, he found that for lower looping, he couldn’t keep the ball on the table because the blades were too fast.

The advantage of using ALC carbon layer
The advantage of using ALC carbon layer

In terms of speed, it’s not as fast as the fastest blades on the market. The blade is very hard and has a good amount of speed. It is a little faster than blades like the Timo Boll Spirit, but it doesn’t compare to blades like the Jun Mizutani Super ZLC, or Zhang Jike Super ZLC.

Timo Boll ALC is slower than the Zhang Jike Super ZLC. I think this is a good thing for many players. Too much speed can be hard to control, and the ALC makes sure that the blade is just right.

The series of ALC blade

There are other blades that are made with the ALC composition.

There are:

  • Timo Boll ALC
  • Garaydia ALC
  • Timo Boll Spirit
  • Viscaria (Review here)
  • Innerforce ALC

Blade review by Dan

In November Dan from TTDaily was lucky enough to visit Borussia Dusseldorf to film the review using their unbelievable facility, where Timo Boll trains and represents his club in the German Bundesliga.

Thanks to Timo Boll and Butterfly for this fantastic opportunity.

Conclusion

With Butterfly Viscaria, Timo Boll ALC is one of the best table tennis blades.

The Timo Boll ALC blade is as good as it gets. It’s a favorite among professional table tennis players because it can be used in a variety of ways by attackers today. There is a sweet spot and a dwell time that make looping very easy. You can open up from the backspin with ease. This blade can fit very well with Chinese rubbers also.
